Abstract
A more compact 980-nm laser module with low power consumption has been developed as a pumping source for optical amplifiers in metropolitan networks. To cope with miniaturization and low power consumption, a coolerless structure has been newly employed. To ensure high-temperature operation we have adopted a new diode chip structure and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) parameters. The resulting device has one-fourth the package size and one-third the power consumption of the conventional butterfly type. Wavelength stability is achieved over the entire operating temperature range.
